Amateur photographer Stewart Canham snapped this amazing    photo of a cormorant swallowing a foot-long pike:
With its rows of needle-sharp teeth, the pike is a feared predator in the water world. But this one hadn’t a hope when a hungry cormorant decided it was supper time. The bird pounced on the foot-long pike with its hooked bill and pulled it to the surface of a lake.
The two antagonists grappled for a few seconds before, in one swift  movement, the magnificent bird extended and twisted its neck in preparation for supper. Its highly elastic throat allowed the cormorant to gobble the pike down whole within seconds.

ROGERS COUNTY -- A Rogers County man went fishing and didn't come home.
According to a report by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, 57-year-old Robert Robison left his house near Keetonville Tuesday evening on his four-wheeled utility vehicle, going to a pond to fish.
When he didn't come back, his family got worried and started looking for him. They found his body at the bottom of a steep hill north of Highway 20 just before noon Thursday.
Investigators believe Robison lost control of the 2005 Kawasaki Mule after driving on a path that was washed out. His vehicle hit an embankment, and Robison was thrown about 30 feet. He died at the scene of head injuries.
He was not wearing a safety belt.

KEY WEST, Fla. — Fishing on 80 boats, more than 600 anglers from around the U.S. and other countries are battling sailfish in Florida Keys waters during the eighth annual World Sailfish Championship, that began Wednesday morning and continues through Saturday.

The tournament is characterized by three days of hard-fought fishing, a packed schedule of social and charity events, and participation from celebrities like Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs and wrestler "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan.
According to tournament chairman and founder Chris King, the total cash prize purse is expected to exceed more than $1 million
The sailfish spectacular began Tuesday evening with final registration at tournament headquarters in Mallory Square overlooking Key West Harbor. A mandatory captains meeting was followed by opening ceremonies, a color guard presentation, military flyover, kick-off party and a concert with Randy Houser.
Retired Army Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf and retired Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula serve as honorary chairmen for the event, which has donated $2 million to charity over the last seven years. Other industry titans including auto dealer and NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick, and Bob Rich fish in the tournament. So do athletes and celebrities including Johnny Bench, Wade Boggs and Carson Daly.
Competition began with lines in the water at 8 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Lines-out is to be called at 3:30 p.m. both days. After a non-fishing "lay day" Friday, the battle for angling supremacy culminates Saturday with fishing from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Social events include the Sunset Key Seafood Extravaganza at Mallory Square, the Coach's Party at Mallory Square featuring silent and live charity auctions, boat manufacturers' dockside parties and more. The Florida Viking Yachts Dealers Awards Banquet, presented by Galati Yacht Sales and HMY Yacht Sales, follows Saturday's fishing. As the clock expired during the first day of at 3:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, 258 sailfish releases had been tallied, but some 20 boats were still hooked up to fish, according to tournament director Mike Weinhofer.

No fish story: Man jailed for weighting fish

DALLAS -- A suburban Dallas man must serve 15 days in jail after admitting to stuffing a lead weight into a bass he caught during a fishing tournament. A Texas Parks and Wildlife Department spokesman told The Dallas Morning News that Robby Rose must also surrender his fishing license. That's after the 45-year-old man pleaded guilty to felony attempted theft after admitting to rigging his fish.

The felony charge relates to the bass boat Rose hoped to win with the rigged fish at a bass-fishing tournament on Lake Ray Hubbard last October.
Rockwall County District Attorney Kenda Culpepper told the newspaper that her office considered the issue one of a $55,000 bass boat, not a 10-pound fish.
The newspaper reported fishing contest officials became suspicious after feeling a lump inside the fish and confronted Rose.

Fishing in Maine — Let the Fun Begin

AUGUSTA — The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has come up with a new online service that is sure to have anglers hooked.

“The Maine Fishing Guide” is an online tool to assist anglers with locating Maine’s sportfish locations, along with giving fishermen ideas to plan their next outdoor fishing adventure.

According to IF&W, this tool is unique among the states and makes Maine a leader in providing information to anglers in a unique, useable format.

“Maine is a world class fishing destination, and The Maine Fishing Guide shows anglers why and where,” said John Boland, director of IF&W’s Fisheries Division. “This service is a great way for people to seek — and explore — locations throughout the state that they may not have heard about.”

The Maine Fishing Guide is configured on GoogleEarth software, which users may download onto their computer from the guide’s home page.

Who needs a fishing license in Maine?

AUGUSTA — A person is required to obtain a valid fishing license prior to fishing in inland waters or transporting fish taken from inland waters. A person is required to keep a fishing license at all times while fishing or transporting fish and must exhibit their license for inspection by any warden, department employee, guide or landowner upon request. Possession of fishing tackle in the fields or forest or on the waters or ice in Maine without a fishing license is fishing in violation of the law. When obtaining a resident license, it is the responsibility of the applicant to submit proof of residency. Maine residents under 16 and nonresidents under 12 may fish without a license. Maine residents (and immediate family members who live with that person ) may fish without a license from their own land if that person owns more than 10 acres of land, lives on that particular piece of land, and the land is used exclusively for agricultural purposes. Is Bass Fishing the Next Big High School Sport?

The Illinois High School Association has hooked more schools to participate in its one-of-a-kind state championship bass-fishing tournament this year. Eleven central Illinois schools will compete in the sectional tournament April 23 at Lake Sangchris. Top finishers will go on to compete in the state finals at Carlyle Lake May 7-8. So far, 225 schools are entered, up from 199 in 2009.
“I’m pleased we have 26 more additions,” says Dave Gannaway, Illinois High School Association assistant executive director. “Schools are financially strapped, and they are trying to figure out how to keep the sports and activities they have. “It’s not a good time to add activities or sports, so I’m pretty amazed we have this increase.”
As more and more schools offer angling as a sport, do you think it will ever attain the same level of acceptance as more traditional high school sports? For all you ex-high school jocks out there, would you be happy to see your sons (or daughters) give up football or baseball for a baitcaster?
